Professor Paul Hansma received his B.A. from New College, Sarasota, FL, and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. He came to the UCSB Physics Department in 1972 as an Assistant Professor, became an Associate Professor in 1976, and attained full professorship in 1980. He won the distinguished Biological Physics Prize in 2000 from the American Physical Society. More information is available from the UCSB Physics website (www.physics.ucsb.edu).

Jerry(Zongren) Zhang; Undergraduate research assistant; Email: zongren@ucsb.edu I’m a junior physics student at UCSB. I build apparatus and analyze data for chronic pain and neuroscience studies. I enjoy working with 3-D printers, python, and inspiring researchers. Outside of the lab and classroom I enjoy playing piano and Minecraft.

Emma Chau: is a 2nd year Microbiology student in the College of Letter and Science. She is interested in the fields of neuroscience and physiology, and hopes to pursue a career in either biomedical research or medicine. In her free time, she enjoys distance running and playing the violin. She is currently trying to teach herself coding in Python

Kelly Ilmi, Undergraduate Research Assistant,
Kelly is a 3rd year Honors Biology student at UCSB. She is interested in pursuing a career in medicine and is fascinated by neuroscience and orthopedics. In her free time, she enjoys playing sports and learning new languages.

Katherine is a third-year Honors Molecular & Cellular Biology student at UCSB. She is especially interested in neuroscience, oncology and is pursuing a career in medicine. She enjoys working on experimental design, data analysis, and literature review. Outside of the lab, she loves traveling, music, and working out.

Javier J. Reveles, Hansma Lab Manager and Study Coordinator. for the Chronic Pain Science Group. I bring with me extensive experience in neuro and brain therapies, which includes 17 plus years working for Medtronic MDT, formerly PS Medical and now Medtronic PLC, Restorative Brain Therapies. During my time working in Bio-tech, I earned a medical device design patent for a catheter in an LP shunt kit as a co-inventor. The LP Strata shunt is used to treat and manage hydrocephalus a neurological condition. While at Medtronic, I also served as a senior lab lead and R&D Technologist, specializing in experimental test setups and test proctoring, along with being part of a core R&D team supporting the Strata valve product portfolio and manufacturing line. I’m now proud to be part of the neuroscience team within the physics department at UC Santa Barbara. Every day, I strive to bring that same level of enthusiasm, curiosity and dedication to both my research and work collaborating with Professor Paul Hansma and our brilliant team of students in the Hansma Research Lab.
